March 8th, 2022 is an exciting day in Alberta given private cannabis retail will be allowed to sell and deliver products via e-commerce. This change took a lot of hard work from a lot of people: consumers; regulators; politicians; and entrepreneurs. You can read the AGLC press release here.
Diplomat is excited to announce that this legislative change will also open up a new opportunity – the first of its kind in Canada – that is; public consumption of cannabis will be allowed at live events/festivals through delivery. Diplomat has been working with various levels of government over the last 9 months to help create a positive, safe and secure environment and through those conversations, we have received regulatory clarity that cannabis can be consumed at live events/festivals without the need for a special event cannabis license.
How it Works:
- Consumption of cannabis must be approved by the municipality in which the event/festival is located.
- The product can only be delivered to a consumer at a secure space at the site from a legal retailer.
- Cannabis can be combined with food/drink at the location as long as the food/drink provider does not charge for the service (such a service would be in violation of the Cannabis Act).
- Only non-combustible cannabis can be consumed.
- Federally approved cannabis beverages, edibles, cannabis isolates, distillates, and oils that can be paired/infused with food and drinks (non-alcoholic drinks) can be consumed on site.
- The cannabis consumption area of the site is exclusively adult only (18+).
- The cannabis consumption area of the site will be cannabis only and alcohol not will be allowed in the space.
- All workers providing this service will need to have QCW.
Diplomat has also submitted suggested regulatory changes (for inclusion in the Red Tape Reduction Bill) that could allow for the onsite storage and sale of cannabis on site. Diplomat will continue to advocate for these changes. This is a first step and a very encouraging one as this industry continues to develop and mature. In this regard Alberta is leading the way and Diplomat will continue to advocate for this initiative in other provinces and territories
