Drone Delivery Canada: Revolutionizing Logistics with Drone-Based Solutions

Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) is a publicly traded, award-winning, pioneering, technology company focused on designing, developing and implementing commercially viable, drone-based logistics. They offer fast, reliable deliveries via drones for airports, healthcare, mining and more, particularly to remote and underserved communities. Their vision is to be the premier global drone solutions company.

Diplomat recently spoke with Katt Keuleman of DDC about what opportunities and challenges lie ahead for this groundbreaking technology, and to answer the burning question: when can we
expect pizza deliveries to our tenth-story balconies?

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leaders
The concept for DDC was inspired by a young boy who lost his life after he did not receive an oxygen tank in his rural community because of a lack of delivery options. This experience motivated the founders to devise a solution that could bridge gaps in accessibility, especially across Canada’s vast and varied landscapes.

What began as the seedling of an idea has grown into an award-winning company that continues to evolve to meet increasing demand for innovative, sustainable and cost-effective delivery solutions. DDC’s success is in part due to the strategic partnerships its cultivated across various sectors. As a result, DDC has a positive and cooperative relationship with both the Regulator (Transport Canada) and the Air
Navigation Service Provider (NAV Canada).

One of the most promising applications of DDC’s Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs) is the transport of high-value, lightweight items, such as healthcare equipment and medical samples. Projects like DroneCare with Halton Healthcare in Southern Ontario demonstrate the potential for RPAs to handle critical deliveries between hospitals, ensuring timely and efficient service.

A notable marker of DDC’s success is the merger with Volatus Aerospace, which could lead to the creation of larger drones capable of both manned and unmanned flights. This collaboration will combine DDC’s technological expertise with Volatus’ expertise in aerial operations and commercialization, potentially revolutionizing the drone delivery landscape.

Current Deployments and Future Projections
DDC is making significant strides in deploying RPAs through the establishment of the world’s first airport drone delivery hub, in partnership with Edmonton International Airport (YEG). In this model, DDC’s RPAs handle small deliveries from YEG to an off-airport property that houses a DroneSpot™ – a constructed, designated safe landing area for the drone. The first phase focuses on courier logistics, with plans to extend services to clinics serving Montana First Nation, proving the viability and scalability of drone delivery systems.

YEG is the first airport in Canada to have commercial drone delivery services in full operation, and could serve as a blueprint for other airports. Moreover, DDC continues to seek new and innovative ways to service their customer’s ever-expanding needs. Interest in drone delivery services is rapidly increasing, reflecting a widespread curiosity about this emerging technology. However, there is a significant knowledge gap regarding the initial investment and operational complexities involved. DDC is tasked with addressing these misconceptions by demonstrating how drone technology can supplement and enhance
deliveries.

To address this, DDC is committed to involving local communities in the operation and management of RPAs by providing robust pilot training and creating jobs. This is evident in the potential of DroneSpots™, which allow drones to fly from depot-to-depot to theoretically access far-reaching remote communities. This would allow for faster deliveries to isolated areas and contributes to the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles that have been gaining traction around the world.

Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Safety
The integration of RPAs into shared airspace presents several challenges, including regulatory hurdles. DDC is actively working to address these issues through pioneering solutions like detect-and-avoid technology. For instance, Canary RPA is equipped with a built-in parachute recovery system to enhance safety, and flights are closely monitored to ensure compliance with regulations. Currently, flights are mostly restricted to existing infrastructure over city streets and not over pedestrians. You’ll have to wait until these safety measures are sorted before getting Uber Eats to your apartment window.

DDC is working closely with Transport Canada and NAV Canada to navigate this complex regulatory environment. Weather conditions and geographical factors add to the intricacies, especially in a climate like Canada where wind, snow, and ice impact operational capabilities. Despite these challenges, DDC sees numerous opportunities, particularly through potential partnerships like the one with Volatus Aerospace, which could significantly expand its reach and capabilities globally.

The Future of Drone Transportation
The future of drone transportation looks promising, with ongoing advancements expected to enhance speed, flexibility, sustainability and cost-effectiveness. However, more education is needed so that individuals and organizations understand the regulatory requirements, investment levels and benefits of implementing that technology.

Therefore, to address public concerns and demonstrate the benefits of drone technology, DDC provides regular updates on its projects. Additionally, DDC includes QR codes at each of its drone spots to help citizens understand the drone that is being used, the flight path and its impact on the area.

In summary, Drone Delivery Canada is leading a transformative industry, combining innovation with a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. As they continue to navigate the complexities of RPA deployment, their efforts are set to redefine logistics and enhance accessibility across Canada.
